Be IN with Your SKIN: 15 Toxic Skincare and Beauty Chemicals to Avoid

Our skin is the largest organ in our body, covering an average of about 20 square feet in adults. It serves as a protective barrier, shielding our internal organs from external threats such as bacteria, viruses, and harmful UV rays from the sun. In addition to its role as a barrier, the skin also plays a crucial role in absorbing nutrients and chemicals.

One of the main functions of the skin is to absorb nutrients such as topical medications and sunlight to produce vitamin D. When we apply skincare products or makeup to our skin, the skin absorbs the ingredients, allowing them to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin where they can have an impact. This is why it is important to choose skincare and beauty products that are free from harmful chemicals and toxins, as they can be absorbed into the bloodstream and have negative effects on our health.

Skincare and beauty products are meant to help us look and feel our best, but unfortunately, many of the products we use daily contain harmful chemicals that can have long-term detrimental effects on our health. It’s important to be aware of what ingredients are in the products we use and to opt for safer, non-toxic alternatives whenever possible.

Toxic chemicals found in skincare and beauty products can accelerate the aging process and cause other potential dangers to our health. These chemicals can break down collagen and elastin in the skin, leading to premature aging, wrinkles, and sagging. In addition, some toxic chemicals have been associated with an increased risk of certain health conditions.

In my previous article on ditching toxic skincare and beauty products, I highlighted the importance of choosing natural and organic products that are free from harmful chemicals. These chemicals can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier function and lead to irritation, inflammation, and even long-term health issues. In this blog, I’m getting a little more granular on common toxic chemicals you should avoid.

Look for safe beauty products which don't contain harmful chemicals.

Here are 15 toxic chemicals commonly found in skincare and beauty products:

1. Parabens (Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben): Parabens are commonly used as preservatives in cosmetics and have been linked to hormone disruption, reproductive issues, and an increased risk of breast cancer. Non-toxic alternatives include preservatives like tocopherol (vitamin E) and potassium sorbate.

2. Phthalates (Dibutyl Phthalate, Diethyl Phthalate): Phthalates are often found in fragrances and have been linked to endocrine disruption, birth defects, and developmental issues. Non-toxic alternatives include phthalate-free fragrances and essential oils.

3. Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and can be found in nail polishes, hair straightening treatments, and skincare products. Non-toxic alternatives include formaldehyde-free nail polishes and hair treatments.

4. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): These surfactants are commonly used in cleansers and shampoos and can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs. Non-toxic alternatives include gentle surfactants like Cocamidopropyl betaine and decyl glucoside.

5. Synthetic Fragrances: Synthetic fragrances can contain hundreds of potentially harmful chemicals that can cause allergic reactions, respiratory issues, and hormone disruption. Non-toxic alternatives include essential oils and plant-based fragrances.

6. Mineral Oil: Mineral oil is a byproduct of petroleum and can clog pores, leading to acne and skin irritation. Non-toxic alternatives include plant-based oils like jojoba, argan, and coconut oil.

7. Oxybenzone: Oxybenzone is a chemical UV filter commonly found in sunscreen that can disrupt hormone function and harm coral reefs. Non-toxic alternatives include mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

8. Triclosan: Triclosan is an antibacterial agent found in soaps and toothpaste that can contribute to antibiotic resistance and disrupt hormone function. Non-toxic alternatives include natural antibacterial agents like tea tree oil and neem extract.

9. Toluene: Toluene is a solvent found in nail polish and hair dyes that can cause neurological damage and respiratory issues. Non-toxic alternatives include toluene-free nail polishes and hair dyes.

11. Propylene glycol: This ingredient is used as a humectant in skincare products, but it can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and even organ toxicity with prolonged use.

12. Ethanolamines (MEA, DEA, TEA): Ethanolamines are often used in skincare products as emulsifiers and pH adjusters, but they can be absorbed through the skin and accumulate in the body, leading to potential health risks such as liver and kidney damage. Non-toxic alternatives include natural emulsifiers like cetearyl alcohol and sorbitan olivate.

13. Synthetic Colors: Synthetic colors in skincare and beauty products can contain heavy metals and other toxic ingredients that can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. Non-toxic alternatives include natural pigments derived from fruits, vegetables, and minerals.

14. Silicones: Silicones are commonly used in skincare products to create a smooth, silky texture, but they can clog pores and prevent the skin from breathing properly, leading to breakouts and other skin issues. Non-toxic alternatives include plant-based oils and butters like shea butter and jojoba oil.

15. Synthetic Preservatives: Synthetic preservatives like methylisothiazolinone and benzalkonium chloride can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. Non-toxic alternatives include natural preservatives like potassium sorbate and grapefruit seed extract.

And a bonus one: BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole) and BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene): BHA and BHT are synthetic antioxidants commonly used in skincare products that are linked to cancer and hormone disruption. Non-toxic alternatives include natural antioxidants like vitamin C and green tea extract.

While this is a short list of toxic chemicals found in skincare and beauty products, your best bet is to go with a company that is transparent about the chemicals they do include that are safe and those they exclude that are not safe. Third-party testing is also an indication that the products have been evaluated independently. You can also go to the Environmental Working Group to search for their safety evaluations of specific products. Their Skin Deep® Database and EWG-VERIFIED ® product listing can support you in choosing non-toxic products.

When shopping for skincare and beauty products, always read the ingredient list and opt for products free from these toxic chemicals. Be IN with Your SKIN! Your skin and overall health will thank you!
