As we navigate through life, we all strive for happiness and a sense of well-being. When we live our best lives, we are moving toward our highest potential. In other words, we flourish. However, in today’s fast-paced and stressful world, it can be challenging to achieve this state of flourishing. But fear not, positive psychology has some powerful tools that can help us all live a life of fulfillment and happiness.
Positive psychology, a branch of psychology that focuses on the study of optimal human functioning, emphasizes the importance of 5 pillars that serve as the building blocks for a flourishing life. In his book “Flourish,” Martin Seligman outlines these five pillars of positive psychology: Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment (PERMA). Let’s dive deeper into these concepts and understand how they can help us achieve health and well-being.
Positive Emotions: The Foundation of Flourishing
Positive emotions are a crucial aspect of our overall well-being. They not only make us feel good, but they also have a profound impact on our physical and mental health. According to Seligman, positive emotions not only broaden our perspective and thinking but also build resilience and boost our immune system. By focusing on cultivating positive emotions such as joy, gratitude, hope, love, and contentment, we can increase our overall well-being.
Key question: What percent of the time do you reflect positively versus negatively on your health and well-being?
Key strategy: Cultivate positive emotions through reflecting on what is going well, no matter how small it is. While it’s easy to reflect on what is not going well in your health and well-being, it’s important to avoid drowning in negative emotions and develop a positive outlook. There are exercises to develop gratitude such as using a gratitude journal or using the 3 good things exercise every day.

Engagement: The Key to Finding Flow
Engagement refers to the state of being completely immersed in an activity that is both challenging and enjoyable. This state of flow, as described by positive psychology pioneer Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, is critical for our well-being. When we are engaged in activities that challenge us and bring us joy, we experience a sense of fulfillment and purpose. It can be anything from our work or hobbies to spending time with loved ones.
Key question: How often do you find yourself absorbed in an activity that you enjoy so much that you lose track of time?
Key strategy: Make a list of activities that you enjoy and make sure you make time to incorporate those you enjoy most into your schedule.
Relationships: The Power of Connection
Human beings are social creatures, and our relationships play a significant role in our overall well-being. Positive psychology emphasizes the importance of healthy and meaningful relationships as they provide us with support, love, and a sense of belonging. By nurturing positive relationships with family, friends, colleagues, and even strangers, we can improve our emotional well-being and increase our happiness.
Key question: What relationships are most important to you?
Key strategy: Build connections with the relationships you value by scheduling time to reach out whether it’s a quick call, a letter, a social event, or even a text. In an opportune moment, you may even want to genuinely acknowledge why you appreciate the individual or recognize an accomplishment.
Meaning: Finding Purpose in Life
Having a sense of meaning and purpose in life is crucial to our well-being. Positive psychology suggests that finding our “why” can give us a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. By identifying our values, strengths, and passions, we can align our daily activities with what truly matters to us. This alignment leads to a sense of fulfillment, which is essential for our well-being.
Key question: Can you describe your values, strengths, passions, or life purpose?
Key strategy: Get to truly appreciate yourself and learn what is most important to you. Exercises such as the VIA Character Strengths Survey, Brene Brown’s Living Into Your Values Tool, or Tony Robbin’s How to Find Your Passions are just a few tools that you can use. Living your values, passions, and life purpose enhances your well-being.
Accomplishment: The Importance of Setting Goals
Accomplishment refers to achieving goals that are meaningful and fulfilling for us. Positive psychology research has found that having a growth mindset and setting achievable, yet challenging goals can lead to increased motivation and satisfaction. By continuously working towards our goals, we can experience a sense of accomplishment, which contributes to our overall well-being and happiness.
Key Question: How often have you set one or more health goals and they failed?
Key Strategy: Remind yourself that health and wellness is a journey and set goals using the SMART goal method. Achieving small, achievable goals can help you ultimately reach bigger goals.
Summary:
By emphasizing positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment in our daily lives, we can achieve a state of optimal well-being and happiness. So let’s start incorporating these pillars into our lives and watch our health and well-being flourish. Remember, small steps can lead to significant changes, so let’s take the first step towards a positive and fulfilling life today.
